Detroit Community Benefits Ordinance
In 2016, I worked with Rise Together Detroit, a coalition of grassroots community organizations from across Detroit, and fellow artist Halima Cassells on a series of campaign videos leading up to the November Election. RTD's goal was ensure that Detroiters have a seat at the table when it comes to development in Detroit and that such development is equitable and inclusive. Thus they introduced a Community Benefits Ordinance, later "Proposal A. While a proposal for Community Benefits with more funding and less teeth (Proposal B) beat RTD’s proposal by a small margin, the work of RTD put the conversation about community benefits onto the table. Without RTD, there would likely be no ordinance at all. Taken in hindsight, the videos show the evolution of the grassroots campaign.
